Short films 1989 – 2009: Europe on the Move
In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the revolutionary events of 1989, the Prague office of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung has prepared a web dossier entitled “1989-2009:  Europe on the Move”, where in addition to articles and studies on this topic you can also find four short films. These documentaries, each just a few minutes long, present interviews with the following personalities:  Šimon Pánek (director of People in Need), Pavla Frýdlová (co-founder of Gender Studies), Marta Hudečková (chair of the Roma organization Manushe) and Oldřich Tůma (director of the Institute for Contemporary History of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic), reflecting their views of what 1989 means and has contributed to Czech society. Answers to these questions are part of the speakers’ reflections on the 20 years since the fall of the Iron Curtain and the impact of those events on developments in civil society, democratic thought and political culture, the life of the Roma community in the Czech Republic, the environment, coming to terms with the past, the fight against corruption, and the position of women in Czech society. While the year 1989 is mostly remembered as the impulse for a great deal of euphoria, in their conclusions the speakers raise various challenges and make suggestions for how to achieve more progress on the tasks that face us all.
